Area Guide (SE1)

Out and about in SE1

SE1 covers the large Borough of Southwark. A hit with young business people, the area is in great proximity to the City and is renowned for its markets, restaurants and nightlife.

Borough is also known for its art scene. Walk down Borough High Street and find art galleries showcasing a variety of creatives work, there is also the vibrant Fashion and Textile Museum building standing out alongside the Victorian shopfronts.

As SE1 residents ourselves, let us tell you why we love Borough and discover our favourite haunts!

Maltby Street Market

Borough Market is the indisputable  jewel of SE1 and is a must if you have never been to the area! Alternatively, hidden under the Bermondsey arches you will find Maltby Street Market. They have fresh produce, street food, antiques and much more.

This market was once a small venue for local traders but now you can become inspired by cracking coffee and international cuisine.

Southbank Centre

The Southbank Centre holds many outdoor markets and festivals during the summer months. Check out the book market daily and enjoy your new read by the Thames.

Or when the weather isn’t looking too favourable, the Riverside Terrace Cafe is the perfect spot to watch the world go by.

Bermondsey Yard Cafe

Set in a disused car park, you won’t find many eateries like this one! Don’t let the industrial concept put you off though as the interior is modern concrete chic.  The food boasts seasonal and local ingredients and with an ever changing menu means that this restaurant really makes its mark along Bermondsey Street.

The Wall SE1 House of Vans

If you’re looking for somewhere that’s more interesting than your local burger joint- this is it! The Wall SE1 is part of the House Of Vans building and is unique as a multifunction space under the Borough arches. A venue that never takes itself too seriously offers free screening of films, holds events and has a skate park  in the venue. If you’re feeling adventurous give it a go – but maybe before you’ve had one of the signature cocktails.

Fashion & Textile Museum

This bright building in the heart of Bermondsey is an amazing place housing all contemporary fashion, textiles and jewellery.

Founded by the iconic Zandra Rhodes, this museum is a history of all things fashion and is a great inspiration for those who love clothes. It’s also great if you want inspiration before updating the house!

The shows in the museum are ever evolving and changing so no two shows will be the same! The museum also hosts classes and workshops so you can release your inner designer.

Hej Coffee

A firm favourite for coffee lovers and foodies alike- Hej, meaning ‘Hi’ in Swedish, oozes skandi chic but it’s not all about aesthetic.

They serve artisanal hand roasted coffee with a fantastic selection of food that caters for all pallets. So take a walk down to Bermondsey Square and lap up the artistic vibes and brag about how hygge you are!

Watch House

Built in the 19th century this amazing architectural building makes it a memorable coffee shop.  Don’t be fooled by its small appearance, this lovely coffee shop on the corner of Bermondsey Street packs a punch with it’s coffee, pastries and bread.

It’s also a great mix of old and new as the seats have USB chargers in them so makes it a great place to do some out of office work. The Watch House truly confirms that the best things really do come in small packages!
